A camera that drops offline just as someone approaches your gate is not a small inconvenience – it defeats the point of having CCTV in the first place. They want to know which system will keep watch properly, give clear evidence, and stay dependable day after day.

PoE cameras vs WiFi cameras: the core difference
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. A PoE camera uses a single network cable to carry both power and data, usually back to a network video recorder or PoE switch. That means the camera has a direct, wired connection to the system.
A WiFi camera sends data wirelessly over your internet network and still needs power, either from a mains adaptor or, in some models, a rechargeable battery. This makes WiFi cameras attractive where cabling is difficult or where a quick installation matters more than system depth.
On paper, both can show live footage on your phone, send alerts, and record video. In practice, they behave very differently once installed on a real property with thick walls, busy networks, changing light, and areas that matter most at the perimeter.
Where PoE cameras usually come out ahead
If your priority is dependable security rather than basic convenience, PoE usually leads. A wired connection is more stable than wireless, especially on larger properties or in buildings where signal strength varies from room to room. Installation: simple is not always better

If you need a small, flexible, lower-commitment setup and you understand the limits, WiFi may be enough. It can suit lighter domestic use where convenience matters more than comprehensive coverage.
